Preaching (from the lectionary) and the Land

Ancient Synagogue at Capernaum
Once each week, I will share insights from the land (or Fifth Gospel) in relation to the lectionary text for the coming Sunday.  I do this for my own discipline and for the preachers or hearers of sermons based on the assigned gospel reading.

The gospel for this year (designated "C") is Luke.  By searching the internet, the reader can find a number of excellent websites which provide the entire lectionary.

The text for this coming Sunday is Luke 7:1-10.  Insights from the land that might impact your preaching, hearing and doing the Word are:

  • Capernaum became the base for Jesus' Galilean ministry
  • The synagogue practiced a more inclusive Judaism
  • As seen here, even Gentiles are welcomed
  • The assistance of the centurion with the building project may hint at the town's poverty
  • Jewish purity laws may have been in the centurion's mind and behind his caution that Jesus need not come to his home
  • The centurion has the respect and admiration of a God-fearer for the Jewish religion
  • Jesus' "speaking" a healing would not constitute "breaking" sabbath
I hope that these assist you in preparing for Sunday.  Let me hear from you!
