A Summer Treat

The Prickly Pear
I was reminded through a friend's newsletter that summer in the land is the season for a sweetish treat, cacti or the prickly pear.  All across the land now, you will find buyers and sellers of this surprising food source.

While both Israelis and Palestinians enjoy this delight during the months of July and August, the Israelis alone find in the prickly pear an image of themselves.  Like the prickly pear, the Israeli is tough and thorny on the outside but sweet and mellow on the inside.  In fact, the name for this plant is sabras, the same designation given Israeli-born Jews.

This food is available in the United States.  Be adventurous and try it!
