The Golden Gate

The Golden Gate is the easternmost gate of the Old City. As stated previously, the gate remains sealed. In fact, the Moslem Cemetery prohibits even a visit outside the ancient walls.

This gate is best remembered for the triumphal entry of Jesus on Palm Sunday. In the future, it will be know for the second coming of Jesus.

Urban legend has it that the gate has been sealed by Moslems to prevent Jesus' coming again. I do not accept this explanation because Moslems expect the return of Jesus.

Sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite this gate, I think of that day long ago when Jesus paused on his journey into the city and wept for Jerusalem. In His words, they did not know the things that make for peace. Sadly, I ponder whether we know any better the art of peacemaking.
