Preaching and the Land - Luke 10:38-42

Bethany
Jesus often retired to the village of Bethany.  He had friends there who provided accommodations when Jerusalem was overcrowded.  In fact, Bethany may have been his base for the final week in Jerusalem.

The gospel text for Sunday tells of two of those friends.  The setting is familiar in terms of 1st century domestic life and 21st century.  One almost smiles as the story is read.

Here are just a few insights from the Fifth Gospel:
  • Bethany means "house of the poor"
  • Forbidden by the law, it was as close as lepers could come to the Holy City
  • According to John, Lazarus is a member of the household of Mary and Martha
  • Hospitality requires food and drink for a guest
  • Martha seems bent on providing "everything" and needs Mary's assistance
  • Mary has assumed what amounts to a male role, learning at the rabbi's feet
  • Jesus affirms Mary's choice and role while lovingly teaching Martha
