Shavuot Begins Tonight

The celebration of Shavuot begins tonight throughout the land.  Shavuot means "weeks," as the holiday follows seven weeks after Passover.

The purposes of the holiday are to give thanks for the wheat harvest and receive anew the Torah.  This evening will begin with candle-lighting and prayers, followed by a festive meal.

Shavuot continues for two days.  In the synagogue tomorrow, the Ten Commandments will be read.  The Book of Ruth is also central to the studies during the holiday.
