Today's Church on Mt. Zion

Dormition Abbey
On the way to the Upper Room, the pilgrim encounters Dormition Abbey.  Unless the tour guide insists that one not stop, the camera will be called upon to capture the moment.  The narrow approach to Dormition Abbey only adds to its appeal and beauty.

This church is only the latest of numerous churches which have occupied Mount Zion.  Built over the Byzantine Church by the Benedictines, today's church honors the memory of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Tradition says that Mary died here.  The present name softens the term "death" to "sleep," as does the New Testament.

At the lowest level of the church, the holy mother is captured by the artist lying in repose.  Above her can be found the images of other women of the Bible.

This church commands more that a photo.  Enter its doors, and be blessed!
