A River Makes Glad the City of God

Psalm 46, read by President Obama on 9/11, has remained with me over the weekend. One particular image has held me: "a river whose streams make glad the city of God." The accompanying photo by Todd Bolen is of the Dan River in the north of Israel. There is no river flowing through Jerusalem.

For the psalmist, "river" is a metaphor for the blessings of God everyday and especially in difficult times. But not only for the psalmist, all writers of scripture find in "water" the very activity of God. God does and more what water does. Water is lifegiving, especially in this land.

The water source in Jerusalem is the Gihon Springs, not a river. The gracious proclamation of the psalmist is that God was and is refuge, strength and refreshment to Jerusalem. God is in the midst of her.
